We would like to thank Juan Manuel Díaz Burgos for the gift he has given us, giving us all his published editorial material for our library, which can be enjoyed by students and friends of the Gallery. It is an honor that one of the most recognized photographers of the national scene remembers El Fotómata.

From 2001 to 2006 Díaz Burgos (Cartagena, 1951) made more than seven trips to Havana to carry out his project Deseo. Waiting in the queues of camels, cinemas, shopping malls, in any space can arise the spark of the promiscuous look, the furtive kiss or the passionate embrace -explains the artist- to capture sensuality, passion and desire. Winner of the Olorum International Photography Award (Havana), he has more than 100 solo exhibitions and more than 180 group exhibitions that have been shown in the most important museums and galleries in many countries, such as the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, The Meadows Museum Dallas or the Maragume Irai Museum in Japan.

Recently, a news item that defines the position of many politicians before the world of culture has come to light again. That world that makes us think, remember and feel. The photographer Juan Manuel Díaz Burgos, whom I am not lucky enough to know personally, has published that one of his most beloved projects, called ‘Rota’, has been suspended due to disagreements with the city council of that town.

From the first moment the author commented on the situation in the networks he has obtained the support of everyone. Except for some who are not worth commenting on because of their biased view, but to whom one of his many friends has answered very well:

It is as if Dalí donated works to his people and the condition he puts is that it must be exhibited in a worthy place with a publication that collects the work and they tell him that they do not accept the donation because Dalí does it to exalt himself.

And what has happened is something that has been hitting photography for a long time. And that little by little is hurting all of us who are dedicated to it… or at least we enjoy it. Photography has become for many that thing you do with your cell phone and send by whatsapp. It is effortless, it is useless and certainly not worth spending money on it.
